Mount Laguna
The Power of the DogMount Laguna is the high-country passage in Callan and Nora’s ride east: a steep climb from the southern slope opens onto a ridge between deep forest and desert, where they stop to watch the sunrise before continuing toward a lake. Its changing terrain gives their flight a brief pause for stillness and a striking view of the country they are crossing.
Route and Landscape
After heading east on Interstate 8, Callan turns north onto Sunrise Highway. The road climbs in sharp switchbacks up Mount Laguna’s steep southern slope, passes the small town of Descanso, and then follows the mountaintop ridge. Deep pine forest lies to the left; hundreds of feet below on the right is the desert. The mountain route makes the contrast immediate: a wooded ridge and an expansive desert floor occupy opposite sides of the road.
Sunrise and the Ride On
Callan and Nora stop at a pull-off to watch the sun rise over the desert, whose colors shift from red to orange and then through muted browns. They resume the ride along the ridge as pine forest gives way first to chaparral and then to long stretches of grassland. Near the junction with Highway 79, they reach the edge of a lake; Callan turns south and follows its shore to a small restaurant by the water. Mount Laguna is thus not presented as their final destination, but as a passage whose ascent, dawn view, and changing habitats shape the journey before it continues.
